How to Say “Anyway” with 反正 (fǎnzhèng)

反正 (fǎnzhèng) is “anyway / regardless”: it marks a clause as holding no matter what, so you wave the other options aside. Two uses, one idea. As “no matter what,” it caps a disregarded situation, often after 不管 / 随便: 不管他来不来,反正我都去 (“whether he comes or not, I'm going anyway”). To emphasize a reason, it leans on a settled fact to justify a decision: 反正时间还早,我们慢慢走吧 (“it's still early anyway, so let's take our time”). The reason clause can come first or second.

Why this trips learners up

反正 (fǎnzhèng) is “anyway / anyhow / regardless.” English “anyway(s)” is a near-perfect match, which makes this one of the friendlier B2 words to pick up. The single idea under everything it does: 反正 marks a clause as unaffected by the variables in play. Whatever the options, whatever you might object, the thing 反正 introduces still holds, so you wave the alternatives aside with a small shrug of certainty. It's common and natural in speech.

Use 1: “no matter what.” The shape is [disregarded situation],反正 ……, with 反正 sitting after a comma or pause, exactly where English drops “anyway.” The first clause very often carries 不管 (“no matter”), 随便 (“whatever”), or 都一样 (“it's all the same”), and 反正 caps it with the stance that doesn't budge: 不管他来不来,反正我都去 (“whether he comes or not, I'm going anyway”), 你爱信不信,反正这是真的 (“believe it or not, it's true anyway”). The variables get dismissed; the 反正 clause is the fixed point.

Use 2: emphasize a reason. Here 反正 conveys certainty or resolution, leaning on a settled fact to justify a decision or suggestion. The frame runs both ways: 反正 + Reason,Decision (反正时间还早,我们慢慢走吧, “it's still early anyway, so let's take our time”) or Decision,反正 + Reason (你拿去用吧,反正我这个月不用车, “take it and use it, I'm not using the car this month anyway”). That flexibility is worth noting: the reason clause can lead or trail, whichever reads better.

Two things to keep straight. First, this reason use sits close to 既然 (jìrán, “since / now that”), and the two often fit the same sentence, but they aren't identical. 既然 reasons forward from an established premise (“since X is so, then Y”), while 反正 shrugs at the alternatives (“either way, X holds, so Y”). 既然你来了,就帮个忙 argues from your arrival; 反正你来了,就帮个忙 adds “now that you're here regardless.” 既然 is also stiffer about word order, where 反正 moves freely. Second, don't confuse 反正 with its look-alike 反而 (fǎn'ér, “on the contrary / instead”): 我道歉了,他反而更生气了 (“I apologized, but he got even angrier instead”) needs 反而, not 反正. And in both uses 反正 loves company in the second clause: 就 (“then / just”), 也 (“as well”), and 吧 (a soft suggestion) turn up constantly.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 反正他来不来,我都去。 fǎnzhèng tā lái bu lái, wǒ dōu qù. (反正 belongs on the clause that stands, not the variable)
Say this: 不管他来不来,反正我都去。 bùguǎn tā lái bu lái, fǎnzhèng wǒ dōu qù.

Why it happens: 反正 goes on the clause that stands firm, not on the variable you're dismissing. The wavering part, “whether he comes or not,” takes 不管: 不管他来不来,反正我都去. Leading with 反正他来不来 puts the shrug on the wrong clause and reads as a jumble.

Avoid: 我道歉了,他反正更生气了。 wǒ dàoqiàn le, tā fǎnzhèng gèng shēngqì le. (“on the contrary” is 反而, not 反正)
Say this: 我道歉了,他反而更生气了。 wǒ dàoqiàn le, tā fǎn’ér gèng shēngqì le.

Why it happens: 反正 (“anyway / regardless”) and 反而 (“on the contrary / instead”) share the 反 but do opposite jobs. When something turns out the reverse of what you expected, you need 反而: 我道歉了,他反而更生气了 (“I apologized, but he got angrier instead”). 反正 could never carry that “contrary to expectation” twist.

Avoid: 反正我还没想好去不去。 fǎnzhèng wǒ hái méi xiǎnghǎo qù bu qù. (反正 marks a settled stance, so it clashes with being undecided)
Say this: 我还没想好去不去。 wǒ hái méi xiǎnghǎo qù bu qù.

Why it happens: 反正 asserts that the outcome is settled regardless, so it clashes with genuine indecision. 反正我还没想好去不去 (“regardless, I haven't decided whether to go”) contradicts itself. Drop the 反正 if you're still weighing it up, or save 反正 for the moment you've actually settled (反正我不去了, “I'm not going, and that's that”).

Compare & contrast

反正明天是假期,今晚就熬夜吧fǎnzhèng míngtiān shì jiàqī, jīnwǎn jiù áoyè ba = “it’s a holiday tomorrow anyway, so let’s stay up tonight” (a fact that holds regardless)既然明天是假期,今晚就熬夜吧jìrán míngtiān shì jiàqī, jīnwǎn jiù áoyè ba = “since it’s a holiday tomorrow, let’s stay up tonight” (reasoning forward from a premise)反正明天是假期,今晚就熬夜吧 leans on a fact that holds regardless, “it's a holiday tomorrow anyway.” 既然明天是假期,今晚就熬夜吧 steps forward from an established premise, “since it's a holiday tomorrow.” 反正 shrugs (“either way”); 既然 reasons (“given that”).
反正闲着也是闲着,我帮你吧fǎnzhèng xián zhe yě shì xián zhe, wǒ bāng nǐ ba = “I’m free anyway, so I’ll help you” (either way costs me nothing)既然你忙不过来,我帮你吧jìrán nǐ máng bù guòlái, wǒ bāng nǐ ba = “since you can’t manage it all, I’ll help you” (the offer follows from your situation)反正闲着也是闲着,我帮你吧 says helping costs you nothing, “I'm free anyway.” 既然你忙不过来,我帮你吧 ties the offer to your situation, “since you can't manage it all.” Both reach the same offer, but 反正 dismisses the alternatives while 既然 builds on a given.
Rule of thumbReach for 反正 when the outcome holds regardless of the options on the table: you're waving the variables away (“whichever way, this stands”) or leaning on a settled fact to justify a choice (“we can pay by card anyway”). It's flexible in position and carries a shrug of certainty, and it pairs naturally with 就 / 也 / 吧. 既然 is narrower: it reasons forward from one established premise (“since X, then Y”). If you mean “it makes no difference either way,” it's 反正; if you mean “given this is so, therefore,” it's 既然.

Try it yourself

Say “Whether you come or not, I'm going anyway.” Put the wavering part first with 不管, then cap it with 反正: 不管你来不来,反正我都会去.
