How to Say “Already” (Emphatically) with 都…了 (dōu … le)
都…了 (dōu … le) means “already,” like 已经…了 — but with attitude: impatience, surprise, “come on, it’s already…!” 都 + Time + 了 (都九点了,你还不起床?) or Subject + 都 + Predicate + 了 (饭都凉了). Here 都 means “already,” NOT “all.”
Why this trips learners up
都…了 (dōu … le) is an emphatic way to say “already.” It means the same thing as 已经…了, but it’s not neutral — it carries the speaker’s attitude: impatience, disbelief, “seriously, it’s already…!” You reach for it when you’re reacting to a situation, not just reporting it.
It comes in two shapes. 都 + Time + 了 leads the sentence, usually with a 还 / 还在 follow-up that nudges the other person to do (or stop) something: 都九点了,你还不起床?(“it’s already nine — you’re still not up?”), 都半夜了,他还在打游戏 (“it’s the middle of the night and he’s still gaming”). And Subject + 都 + Predicate + 了 puts the subject first: 饭都凉了 (“the food’s gone cold already!”), 你都答应了 (“but you already agreed!”). You can even stack the two markers — 都已经…了 — with no change in meaning.
The crucial warning: this 都 is the “already” 都, not the “all” 都. 饭都凉了 means “the food’s already cold,” not “all the food is cold.” Context and the final 了 tell them apart — when there’s a time word or a change-of-state plus 了 and a whiff of impatience, 都 is “already.”
So when do you pick 都…了 over 已经…了? Both are correct for “already,” but 都…了 adds the emotional colour — 都九点了!(“it's NINE already!”) vs the flat 已经九点了 (“it’s already nine”). Use 都 when you want the attitude to land.

Common mistakes
Why it happens: 都…了 needs the final 了 — it’s the “already / by now” marker. It’s 都十点了 (“it’s already ten”), not 都十点.
Why it happens: In the predicate shape, the subject comes BEFORE 都: 饭都凉了 (“the food’s gone cold already”), not 都饭凉了.
Why it happens: 都…了 pairs with 还 (“still”), not 再: 都十二点了,你还不睡?(“it’s already midnight — you’re still not asleep?”), not …你再不睡?
