How to Say “But Rather” with 而 (ér)
而 (ér) is the contrastive conjunction “but rather / whereas / yet.” Its signature move is the substitution frame 不是 A,而是 B (“not A, but rather B”: 我要的不是道歉,而是行动) and its mirror 是 A,而不是 B (“A, not B”). More broadly, [Sentence 1],而 [Sentence 2] sets two facts side by side as an even contrast (姐姐外向,而妹妹内向). It's a touch formal, and joins clauses or adjectives, never two nouns (that's 和).
Why this trips learners up
而 (ér) is a conjunction that links two related clauses and, above all, points up a contrast between them. Its most useful shape is the substitution frame: 不是 A,而是 B, “not A, but rather B.” 我要的不是道歉,而是行动 (“what I want isn't an apology, but action”), 重要的不是外表,而是内心 (“what matters isn't looks, but the heart”). You reject one thing and assert the real one in its place. The mirror frame flips the polarity: 是 A,而不是 B, “it's A, not B”, 学习是为了自己,而不是为了别人 (“study is for yourself, not for others”).
A particularly handy version is 不是不……,而是……, “it's not that … , it's that …”, which heads off a wrong assumption and gives the true reason: 我不是不想去,而是没时间 (“it's not that I don't want to go, it's that I have no time”), 我不是不想帮你,而是没能力. Strictly the 而 is optional in these frames, but it makes the contrast crisp, so keep it.
Beyond the 是 frames, there's the generalized pattern: [Sentence 1],而 [Sentence 2], which sets two facts side by side as an even, balanced contrast, “whereas / yet.” 姐姐很外向,而妹妹很内向 (“the older sister is outgoing, whereas the younger is shy”), 大家都在努力,而他却在偷懒 (“everyone's working hard, yet he's slacking off”). One more use worth knowing: 而 also works as a formal “and” joining two adjectives or verbs, 这个设计简单而实用 (“simple and practical”), but it can never join two nouns, that job belongs to 和.
The word to hold 而 against, shown below, is 但是 (“but / however”). In the substitution frame they're not interchangeable: “not A, but B” must be 不是 A,而是 B, never 但是. More broadly, 而 gives a balanced contrast (two things weighed side by side, “whereas”), while 但是 marks a sharper turn, clause 2 going against what clause 1 led you to expect. If you're correcting to the real thing or lining up two even facts, reach for 而 / 而是; if you're pushing back against an expectation, reach for 但是.

Common mistakes
Why it happens: The “not A but B” substitution uses 而是, not 但是. 我要的不是道歉,但是行动 is wrong; it's 我要的不是道歉,而是行动 (“not an apology, but action”). After 不是 A, the “but rather” that introduces the real B is 而是.
Why it happens: Match the frame: open with 不是 A and you close with 而是 B (不是外表,而是内心), not 而不是. The 而不是 form belongs to the opposite frame, 是 A,而不是 B (是内心,而不是外表). Mixing them, 不是…,而不是…, doubles the negation and breaks the sense.
Why it happens: 而 joins clauses, verbs, or adjectives, never two nouns. 苹果而香蕉 is wrong for “apples and bananas”; two nouns take 和: 苹果和香蕉. Save 而 for linking a contrast between clauses (…,而…) or a pair of qualities (简单而实用).
