How to Say “Never Again” with 再也不 (zài yě bù)
再也不 / 再也没 (zài yě bù / méi) is how Chinese says “never again,” with real feeling and finality. 再也 (“ever again”) must attach to a negator, and the choice sets the tense: 再也不 + verb + 了 for a decision about the future (我再也不喝酒了, “I'll never drink again”), and 再也没 + verb + 过 for a record of the past (分手以后,再也没见过, “since we broke up, we've never met again”).
Why this trips learners up
再也不 and 再也没 are how you say “never again” in Chinese, with a note of determination or finality behind it. The engine is 再也 (“ever again / any more”), which intensifies a negation, and the key thing a word list won't tell you is that 再也 must attach to a negator, either 不 or 没, and which one you pick sets the tense. One more rule up front: 再也 is only for the negative. For a positive “again” (“let's do it again”) you use plain 再 (再做一次); 再也 without 不 or 没 is wrong.
The future, with 不. The frame is Subject + 再也 + 不 (+ Auxiliary) + Verb Phrase + 了, and it expresses a decision: from now on you won't do it again. 我再也不吃海鲜了 (“I'm never eating seafood again”), 这种错误我再也不会犯了 (“I'll never make this kind of mistake again”). The auxiliaries 想 / 会 / 能 / 要 / 敢 slot in naturally (再也不想…, 再也不敢…). Crucially, this frame ends in 了, a change-of-state 了: it marks that it is now the case that you won't do it again, which is what gives the sentence its ring of resolve. Drop the 了 and it sounds unfinished.
The past, with 没. The frame is Subject + 再也 + 没 + Verb + 过 (+ Object), and it reports a record: from some point in the past up to now, something hasn't happened again. It usually rides on a “从…以后 / …以后 / 自从…” clause that sets the turning point: 那次以后,我再也没坐过飞机 (“after that time, I never flew again”), 分手以后,他们再也没见过 (“they never met again after breaking up”). Here the verb takes experiential 过, because you're stating that the experience hasn't been repeated across that stretch of time.
So the pairing is fixed and it's the heart of the pattern: 不 goes with 了 for the future decision, 没 goes with 过 for the past record. Getting the negator right but the ending wrong (再也不…过, or 再也没…了) is the classic slip, so lock the two halves together. One last comparison: 再也不 is stronger and more emotional than the neutral 不再 (“no longer”). 我不再抽烟 is a calm “I no longer smoke”; 我再也不抽烟了 is a heartfelt “I'm never smoking again.” When you want the vow, reach for 再也.

Common mistakes
Why it happens: 再也 has to attach to a negator, 不 or 没; it can't sit in front of a positive verb. For a positive “again” (“I want to go again”) you use plain 再: 我想再去. 再也 is only for the negative “never again,” so it always comes with 不 or 没.
Why it happens: A past “never again since” takes 再也没 + Verb + 过, not 不 + 过. It's 从那以后,我再也没去过那里 (“since then I've never been there again”), using 没 and the experiential 过. 不 pairs with the future 了; 没 pairs with the past 过. Don't cross them.
Why it happens: The future “never again” is a decision, and Chinese marks that decision with a change-of-state 了. 我再也不喝酒了 (“I'll never drink again”) needs the 了; drop it and 我再也不喝酒 sounds unfinished. Keep 再也不 … 了 together for the resolve.
