How to Say “Not Much” with 不怎么 (bù zěnme)
不怎么 (bù zěnme) before a verb means “not much / not really / not often.” It plays down how much time, energy or frequency goes into an action: Subject + 不怎么 + Verb. 我不怎么运动 (“I don't exercise much”), 他不怎么爱说话 (“he doesn't really like talking”). For a past occasion, switch 不 to 没: 我没怎么复习 (“I didn't review much”). Note this is the verb use, distinct from 不怎么 + adjective (“not very”).
Why this trips learners up
不怎么 (bù zěnme) looks like it should mean “not how,” but before a verb it means “not much / not really / not often.” The frame is Subject + 不怎么 + Verb, and it plays down how much time, energy or frequency goes into the action. The word 怎么 here isn't the question “how”, it's a softener, the same trick you see in 不怎么 + adjective.
Don't box it in as only “not often.” Depending on the verb it shades three ways, all with the same structure. Intensity: 他不怎么爱说话 (“he doesn't really like talking”). Quantity: 我孩子不怎么吃零食 (“my kid doesn't snack much”), 我们在家不怎么看电视 (“we don't watch much TV at home”). Frequency: 老板不怎么来办公室 (“the boss doesn't come to the office often”), 我不怎么在网上买东西 (“I don't shop online much”). The umbrella sense is “not much / not really”; “not often” is just one corner of it.
There's a 不 / 没 split to master. For a general habit you use 不怎么 (present, what you usually do). But for a past or completed occasion, or a verb that leans on 有, you swap 不 for 没: 没怎么. 我没怎么复习 (“I didn't review much”), 昨天肚子不舒服,我没怎么吃东西 (“my stomach was off yesterday, so I didn't eat much”), 这个问题我没怎么想过 (“I haven't really thought about this”). It's the ordinary 不 vs 没 rule: 不 for habits and the present, 没 for the completed past.
Two traps. First, word order: 不怎么 comes before the verb (不怎么运动), and it is not the same as 怎么不. 我不怎么运动 means “I don't exercise much,” but 我怎么不运动? flips into a rhetorical “why don't I exercise?!” Same three characters, opposite meaning, decided by order. Second, keep this verb use apart from 不怎么 + adjective, which means “not very” (这个菜不怎么好吃, “this dish isn't very tasty”). Quick test: before an action verb it's “not much / not often”; before an adjective it's “not very.”

Common mistakes
Why it happens: 不怎么 is an adverb, so it goes before the verb, not after. “I don't exercise much” is 我不怎么运动, not 我运动不怎么. Put 不怎么 first, then the verb it plays down.
Why it happens: A past or completed occasion takes 没怎么, not 不怎么. With 昨天 marking finished time, “I didn't eat much yesterday” is 昨天我没怎么吃东西, not 不怎么吃. Use 不怎么 for habits and the present, 没怎么 for the completed past, the ordinary 不 vs 没 rule.
Why it happens: Order changes everything: 不怎么 (“not much”) is not 怎么不 (“why not”). 我不怎么运动 means “I don't exercise much,” while 我怎么不运动? means “why don't I exercise?!” Keep 不怎么 together and before the verb.
