How to Say “Obviously” with 嘛 (ma)

嘛 (ma) is a sentence-final particle that marks what you're saying as obvious, agreed, or “come on, you know this”: Statement + 嘛. 不想去就别去嘛 (“then obviously don't go”), 累了就休息一下嘛 (“if you're tired, just rest”). It softens advice and lands the triumphant “see, I told you” (我就说会下雨嘛). It sounds exactly like the question particle 吗, but does the opposite job.

Why this trips learners up

The particle 嘛 (ma) goes at the end of a statement to say that what you've just said is obvious, natural, or already agreed: the tone is “come on, you know this.” The frame is simply Statement + 嘛. 不想去就别去 (“if you don't want to go, then obviously don't”), 累了就休息一下 (“you're tired, so just take a break”), 这么简单的题,他当然会 (“a question this easy, of course he can do it”).

That “it's obvious” feeling does a lot of social work. It softens advice and gentle persuasion, nudging someone toward what you both already know makes sense: 有问题就问,别不好意思 (“just ask if you have a question, don't be shy”). It carries the satisfied “see, I told you so”: 我就说今天会下雨 (“see, I said it'd rain today”). And it can defend or reassure with a fact you treat as plain: 别生气了,他也不是故意的 (“don't be cross, it's not as if he did it on purpose”).

The thing to keep straight is that 嘛 only works when the point really is shared or self-evident. Slapping it onto brand-new information the listener couldn't know sounds odd, as if you're insisting they should already have known it. Save 嘛 for what is genuinely obvious, agreed, or being gently urged.

Now the trap. 嘛 sounds exactly like , the yes/no question particle you met early on, but they are different characters with opposite jobs: 嘛 is 口 + 麻, 吗 is 口 + 马. 你很忙?asks a real question (“are you busy?”); 你很忙 makes a statement of the obvious (“you're clearly busy”). One opens a question, the other closes a point. (嘛 has one more use, marking a topic at the front of a sentence, 钱,够用就行, which we treat as a separate, more advanced point.)

Common mistakes

Avoid: 不想去就别去吗。 bù xiǎng qù jiù bié qù ma? (= a question!)
Say this: 不想去就别去嘛。 bù xiǎng qù jiù bié qù ma. (= obviously you needn’t go)

Why it happens: 嘛 (口+麻) and 吗 (口+马) sound identical but do opposite jobs. 不想去就别去吗 reads as a question (“you don't want to go?”); the “then obviously don't go” you mean is 不想去就别去嘛. For a statement of the obvious, use 嘛, not 吗.

Avoid: 你嘛中文说得很好。 nǐ ma zhōngwén shuō de hěn hǎo.
Say this: 你中文说得很好嘛。 nǐ zhōngwén shuō de hěn hǎo ma.

Why it happens: For the self-evident meaning, 嘛 closes the whole statement: 你中文说得很好嘛, not 你嘛中文说得很好. (Front-of-sentence 嘛 is the separate topic-marking use.)

Avoid: 我昨天买了一辆新车嘛。 wǒ zuótiān mǎi le yì liàng xīn chē ma.
Say this: 我昨天买了一辆新车。 wǒ zuótiān mǎi le yì liàng xīn chē.

Why it happens: 嘛 presumes the point is already obvious or shared, so it sits oddly on fresh news: 我昨天买了一辆新车 is the plain way to announce it. Add 嘛 only when you're treating something as evident or agreed, not when you're informing.

Compare & contrast

嘛 (口+麻): a statement of the obvious吗 (口+马): a yes/no questionThe difference
你很忙嘛nǐ hěn máng ma你很忙吗?nǐ hěn máng ma?你很忙嘛 says “you're obviously busy” (the speaker takes it as plain to see). 你很忙吗?asks “are you busy?” (a genuine question). Same má sound, different character, opposite intent.
这样做更好嘛zhèyàng zuò gèng hǎo ma这样做更好吗?zhèyàng zuò gèng hǎo ma?这样做更好嘛 asserts “doing it this way is clearly better.” 这样做更好吗?asks “is doing it this way better?” 嘛 closes a point; 吗 opens a question.
Rule of thumbBoth sit at the very end and sound the same, but 嘛 (口+麻) ends a statement you treat as obvious or agreed (“come on, clearly…”), while 吗 (口+马) turns a statement into a yes/no question. Asserting something self-evident? Use 嘛. Actually asking? Use 吗.

Try it yourself

Say “If you like it, just buy it!” End with 嘛 to make it gently obvious.
