Turning Adjectives into Adverbs with 地 (de)
地 (de) is Chinese’s “-ly”: put it after an adjective to turn it into an adverb of manner, before the verb. Subject + Adjective + 地 + Verb — 认真地学习 (“study seriously”), 高兴地唱 (“sing happily”). Same sound as 的/得, but 地 is the one that goes before a verb.
Why this trips learners up
To say how an action is done — seriously, happily, carefully — Chinese takes the adjective and adds 地 (de), then puts it before the verb. The pattern is Subject + Adjective + 地 + Verb: 你要认真地学习 (“you must study seriously”), 他高兴地跳了起来 (“he jumped up happily”), 老师大声地读课文 (“the teacher reads the text aloud”). 地 is essentially the English “-ly” — it converts a describing word into a manner adverb.
The catch is that 地 is one of three particles all pronounced “de.” Keep them apart by what comes next. Before a verb, it’s 地 — the manner adverb (认真地学习, “study seriously”). Before a noun, it’s 的 — a modifier (认真的学生, “a serious student”). And after the verb, describing the result or degree, it’s 得 — a complement (学得很认真, “studies very seriously”). 地 is the “before-the-verb” one.
Two more notes. Reduplicated adjectives take 地 too: 大家安安静静地看书 (“everyone reads quietly”), 我希望你快快乐乐地长大 (“I hope you grow up happily”). And 地 only converts adjectives — words that are already adverbs (也, 都, 很, 常常) never take it: 我也想去, not 我也地想去.

Common mistakes
Why it happens: Before a verb, the adverbial “de” is 地, not 的: 认真地学习 (“study seriously”). 的 is only for modifying a noun — 认真的学生 (“a serious student”). Same sound, different character.
Why it happens: 地 goes BEFORE the verb (manner). Describing the result or degree AFTER the verb is 得: 他跑得很快 (“he runs fast”), not 他跑地很快. Before → 地; after → 得.
Why it happens: 地 turns an ADJECTIVE into an adverb. Words that are already adverbs — 也, 都, 很, 常常 — never take it: 我也想去, not 我也地想去.
