How to Say “One by One” with 一 (yī)

To say “one by one” in Chinese you just double up: 一 + Measure Word + 一 + Measure Word, with no word for “by.” 一个一个 means “one by one,” and the same frame shifts meaning with the measure word: a time unit gives “little by little” (一天一天, “day by day”), and a verbal measure word gives “over and over” (一遍又一遍).

Why this trips learners up

English needs the word “by” for “one by one,” but Chinese does not. You simply double the measure phrase: 一 + Measure Word + 一 + Measure Word, then the verb. With the all-purpose 个 you get the most common form, 一个一个: 别吵,一个一个说 (“don’t shout, speak one by one”), 请大家一个一个上车 (“please board one by one”). Swap in any other measure word for the same effect: 一张一张签名 (“sign them one by one”), 一步一步来 (“one step at a time”). The doubled phrase is adverbial, so it sits before the verb.

Here is the clever part: the meaning depends entirely on which measure word you double. When you use a time unit like 天 or 年, the sense shifts to “little by little / gradually.” 他的中文一天一天好起来 (“his Chinese is getting better day by day”), 父母一年一年变老 (“our parents are growing older year by year”). Same frame, but “day by day” instead of “item by item.”

And when you double a verbal measure word like 次 (times) or 遍 (times through), the meaning becomes “over and over again.”一次一次打电话,但是没人接 (“I called over and over, but no one answered”). To stress that it happened many times, drop a right between the two halves: 一遍又一遍, 一次又一次. 她一遍又一遍地读那封信 (“she read the letter over and over again”). With 遍/次 you’ll often see a 地 before the verb, since the phrase is describing how the action is done.

One thing to lock in: both halves repeat the same measure word (一个一个, never 一个一张), and the 又 for emphasis goes in the middle (一次又一次), not at the front.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 一个一张拿。 yí gè yì zhāng ná.
Say this: 一个一个拿。 yí gè yí gè ná.

Why it happens: Both halves repeat the same measure word: 一个一个拿 (“carry them one by one”), not 一个一张拿.

Avoid: 又一次一次犯错。 yòu yí cì yí cì fàn cuò.
Say this: 一次又一次犯错。 yí cì yòu yí cì fàn cuò.

Why it happens: The 又 that adds emphasis goes between the two halves, not in front: 一次又一次犯错 (“make the same mistake over and over”), not 又一次一次犯错.

Avoid: 说一个一个。 shuō yí gè yí gè.
Say this: 一个一个说。 yí gè yí gè shuō.

Why it happens: The doubled phrase is adverbial, so it comes before the verb: 一个一个说 (“speak one by one”), not 说一个一个.

一个一个检查yí gè yí gè jiǎnchá一天一天变好yì tiān yì tiān biàn hǎo一个一个检查 means “inspect them one by one,” item after item. 一天一天变好 means “getting better day by day,” a gradual change over time.

Rule of thumbDouble a count or object measure word (个, 张, 步…) for “one by one.” Double a time unit (天, 年…) for “little by little / gradually.” Double a verbal measure word (次, 遍…), often with 又 in the middle, for “over and over again.”
