How to Ask Rhetorical Questions in Chinese (不是……吗, 怎么会, 谁让你)

A rhetorical question makes a point instead of asking for information: the answer is already obvious. Chinese builds them from words you know, in fixed frames, each with its own attitude. 不是……吗?is the friendly reminder (“isn’t it the case that…?”), 能不……吗?is sarcastic (“how could … not …?”), 怎么会……?is disbelief (“how could that be?”), and 谁让你……?is annoyed blame (“who told you to…?”).

Why this trips learners up

A rhetorical question in Chinese looks like a question but works like a statement: you already know the answer, and you ask it to make a point. The good news is that you don’t need new vocabulary, just a few fixed frames built from words you already have. The trick is that each frame carries a specific attitude, so picking the right one is really about picking the right tone.

The easiest and most common is 不是……吗? (“isn’t it the case that…?”). You prepend the fixed 不是 to a whole statement and close with : 这不是你的手机?(“Isn’t this your phone?”), 我不是告诉过你了?(“Didn’t I already tell you?”). It’s warm, even a little teasing, a way of reminding someone of a fact they seem to have forgotten. The key thing to notice: you do not negate the main verb. 不是 wraps the entire sentence, so 明天放假 (“the holiday starts tomorrow”) becomes 不是明天放假?, never 明天不放假吗.

Next is 能不……吗?, which is sarcastic and points at something inevitable. The doubled 能不 literally says “can it not,” and the whole thing means “how could … not …?”: 吃这么多,能不?(“Eating this much, how could you not gain weight?”), 你天天熬夜,能不?(“You stay up every night, how could you not be tired?”). That inner 不 is the whole engine of the pattern; drop it and 能胖吗 turns into a real question, “can I get fat?”, which is the opposite of what you mean.

The third frame is 怎么会……?, a tone of pure disbelief, “how could that possibly be?”: 他那么努力,怎么会失败?(“He works so hard, how could he fail?”), 你怎么会不知道?(“How is it that you don’t know?”). Because 怎么会 is already a question, it takes no 吗 at the end. Last comes 谁让你……?, the surly one. It literally asks “who told you to…?” but really means “it’s your own fault for…”: 你找不到钥匙?谁让你不放在包里。(“You can’t find your keys? Well, who told you not to put them in your bag.”). It’s blunt, so save it for close friends and family, and don’t be surprised when people write it with a period instead of a question mark.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 他怎么会不知道吗? tā zěnme huì bù zhīdào ma?
Say this: 他怎么会不知道? tā zěnme huì bù zhīdào?

Why it happens: 怎么会 is already a question, so it takes no 吗. “How could he not know?” is 他怎么会不知道?, not 他怎么会不知道吗?. Save 吗 for the 不是……吗 and 能不……吗 frames.

Avoid: 吃这么多能胖吗? chī zhème duō néng pàng ma?
Say this: 吃这么多能不胖吗? chī zhème duō néng bù pàng ma?

Why it happens: 能……吗 meaning “how could … not …” needs the inner 不. 吃这么多能胖吗?literally asks “can I get fat?”, the opposite point. Keep the doubled 能不: 吃这么多能不胖吗?, “how could I not get fat?”.

Avoid: 你不已经告诉我了吗? nǐ bù yǐjīng gàosu wǒ le ma?
Say this: 你不是已经告诉我了吗? nǐ bù shì yǐjīng gàosu wǒ le ma?

Why it happens: The reminder frame is the fixed 不是……吗; you don’t just negate the verb with 不. “Didn’t I already tell you?” is 你不是已经告诉我了吗?, not 你不已经告诉我了吗. Prepend 不是 to the whole statement.

Compare & contrast

Rhetorical: you already know the answerGenuine: you actually want to knowThe difference
不是在桌子上吗?bù shì zài zhuōzi shàng ma? = “Isn’t it on the table?” (I’m sure it is; just a reminder)在桌子上吗?zài zhuōzi shàng ma? = “Is it on the table?” (I really don’t know; a real question)不是在桌子上吗?= “Isn’t it on the table?”, said when you’re sure it is and you’re nudging the other person to look again. 在桌子上吗?= “Is it on the table?”, a real question when you genuinely don’t know. The 不是…吗 wrapper is what turns a question into a reminder.
这个怎么会难?zhège zěnme huì nán? = “How could this be hard?” (it’s obviously easy)这个会难吗?zhège huì nán ma? = “Will this be hard?” (a sincere question)这个怎么会难?= “How could this be hard?”, said when it’s obviously easy, so no answer is expected. 这个会难吗?= “Will this be hard?”, a sincere check. Same 会 and same words, but 怎么会 asserts while 会…吗 asks.
Rule of thumbIf you already know the answer and you’re making a point (a reminder, disbelief, or blame), reach for a rhetorical frame: 不是…吗 to remind, 能不…吗 to be sarcastic, 怎么会 for disbelief, 谁让你 for blame. If you actually want the information, drop the frame and ask the plain question.

Try it yourself

Say “Isn’t this your phone?” as a friendly rhetorical reminder. Use the 不是……吗 frame: 这不是你的手机吗?
