How to Say “What Exactly / On Earth” with 究竟 (jiūjìng)

究竟 (jiūjìng) is the more formal way to sharpen a question into “what exactly / on earth?!” It comes in two question shapes, 究竟 + question word (这究竟是怎么回事?) and 究竟 + V不V (你究竟去不去?), and it also emphasizes a fact “after all” with 是 (孩子究竟是孩子). It's the written, careful-speech twin of the spoken 到底.

Why this trips learners up

究竟 (jiūjìng) is built from 究 (“to investigate”) and 竟 (“to the end”), so at heart it means investigating something to the very bottom. Its main job, and the reason you'll reach for it, is to sharpen a question into “what exactly?” or “what on earth?”: 这究竟是怎么回事?(“what exactly is going on here?”), 你究竟在哪里?(“where exactly are you?”). It's the same intensifying move as 到底, only a shade more formal and written. Where 到底 sounds like everyday speech, 究竟 fits an essay, a report, or a more careful, pointed tone.

The questioning 究竟 takes two shapes. The first is 究竟 + a question word (谁 / 什么 / 哪里 / 什么时候 / 为什么), a targeted question after a specific piece of information: 他究竟为什么迟到?(“why exactly was he late?”). The second is 究竟 + Verb + 不 / 没 + Verb, the choice question “…or not?”: 你究竟买不买?(“are you going to buy it or not?”), 他究竟有没有告诉你?(“did he tell you or not?”). Two rules ride along, both shared with 到底. First, a 究竟 question cannot take 吗: say 你究竟同意了没有?, not 你究竟同意了吗. Second, 究竟 belongs in the question, never the answer: you ask with it, you don't reply with it (for “I really don't know,” use 确实 or 真的).

Its second use is “after all.” Here 究竟 stops being a question and instead emphasizes a fact, in the fixed frame Noun + 究竟 + 是 + the same Noun, followed by the consequence: 老板究竟是老板,一句话就决定了一切 (“the boss is the boss, after all, one word from him settled everything”), 母语究竟是母语,说起来毫不费力 (“your mother tongue is your mother tongue, after all, it comes out effortlessly”). This works just like 毕竟 (bìjìng): the repeated noun says “that's simply what this is, and it explains the rest.” The repetition is the whole pattern; you can't swap in a bare adjective (孩子究竟很调皮 doesn't work, but 孩子究竟是孩子 does).

Because 究竟 and 到底 overlap so much, it's worth being clear on where they differ, which the comparison below lays out. Two gaps matter. First, only 到底 also means “finally” (公交车到底来了, “the bus finally came”); 究竟 never carries that sense, so don't use it for a long-awaited result. Second, only 究竟 doubles as a noun meaning “the actual truth”: 问出个究竟 or 弄个究竟 (“get to the bottom of it”), where 到底 can't stand. Everything else, the emphatic question and the “after all” 是-pattern, they share, with 究竟 simply the more formal choice.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 你究竟同意了吗? nǐ jiūjìng tóngyì le ma? (究竟, like 到底, can’t take 吗; use 没有 or V不V)
Say this: 你究竟同意了没有? nǐ jiūjìng tóngyì le méiyǒu?

Why it happens: A question with 究竟 can't take 吗, exactly as with 到底. Say 你究竟同意了没有?, using 没有, or make it a V不V question (你究竟同不同意). 究竟 already sharpens the question, so 吗 clashes with it; swap 吗 for 没有.

Avoid: 孩子究竟很调皮。 háizi jiūjìng hěn tiáopí. (the “after all” 究竟 needs 是 + the repeated noun, not a bare adjective)
Say this: 孩子究竟是孩子,调皮很正常。 háizi jiūjìng shì háizi, tiáopí hěn zhèngcháng.

Why it happens: The “after all” 究竟 is a fixed frame, Noun + 究竟 + 是 + the SAME noun. You can't hang it on a bare adjective (孩子究竟很调皮 is wrong); you need the noun repeated: 孩子究竟是孩子,调皮很正常 (“kids are kids, after all, so being naughty is only natural”). The repetition is what carries the “that's just what it is” feeling.

Avoid: 这件事我究竟不清楚。 zhè jiàn shì wǒ jiūjìng bù qīngchu. (究竟 goes in a question, not a statement answer; use 真的 / 确实)
Say this: 这件事我确实不清楚。 zhè jiàn shì wǒ quèshí bù qīngchu.

Why it happens: 究竟 lives in the question, not the answer. You can ask 这究竟是怎么回事?, but you can't reply with 我究竟不清楚; for “I really don't know” use 确实 or 真的 (我确实不清楚). 究竟 reaches toward an answer, so it has no place once you're the one giving it.

Compare & contrast

究竟 jiūjìng (formal / written “exactly, on earth”)到底 dàodǐ (everyday spoken; also “finally”)The difference
你究竟想怎么样?nǐ jiūjìng xiǎng zěnmeyàng? = “what exactly do you want?” (more formal / written)你到底想怎么样?nǐ dàodǐ xiǎng zěnmeyàng? = the same question, everyday and spoken你究竟想怎么样? and 你到底想怎么样? both mean “what on earth do you want?!” They're interchangeable in an emphatic question; 究竟 sounds more formal or written, 到底 more everyday and spoken. In an essay or a serious tone, 究竟 fits; in casual conversation, 到底.
我们一定要问出个究竟wǒmen yídìng yào wèn chū ge jiūjìng = “we have to get to the bottom of it,” 究竟 as a NOUN (“the actual truth”), which 到底 can’t do公交车到底来了gōngjiāochē dàodǐ lái le = “the bus finally came,” 到底 = finally, a sense 究竟 doesn’t carryThe two don't fully overlap. Only 到底 has the “finally” sense (公交车到底来了, “the bus finally came”); 究竟 can't do that. Going the other way, only 究竟 works as a noun, “the actual truth”: 问出个究竟 (“get to the bottom of it”). They do share the “after all” 是-pattern (孩子究竟是孩子 / 孩子到底是孩子).
Rule of thumbIn an emphatic question, 究竟 and 到底 are interchangeable, with 究竟 more formal or written and 到底 more spoken. Both also mean “after all” with 是 + a repeated noun (孩子究竟是孩子). The two gaps: only 到底 carries “finally” (公交车到底来了), and only 究竟 works as a noun (“the truth,” 问出个究竟). For a formal register, reach for 究竟; for casual speech, 到底.

Try it yourself

Ask “When exactly is he coming?” with the formal 究竟 + question word frame.
