How to Say “Originally / All Along” with 本来 (běnlái)

本来 (běnlái) is one adverb doing two jobs, both rooted in “from the start.” 本来是…的 sets up a plan that then changed: 我本来是要去的,可是… (“I was originally going to go, but…”). 本来就 emphasizes that something is inherently or obviously the case, “all along / of course”: 你本来就很聪明 (“you've always been smart”). Keep it apart from 原来 (“it turns out”).

Why this trips learners up

本来 (běnlái) means “originally / at first / from the start,” and it's one of the first “originally” words learners meet because both characters are so simple. What makes it worth a closer look is that it does two different jobs, and they split on the little word that follows. Both grow from the same root idea, “how things were at the origin”: in one use, that starting state has since changed; in the other, it has been true all along.

Use 1: a change of plans, with 本来(是)…的. You state how something was originally meant to be, then how it turned out differently: Subject + 本来 + (是) + [(不) 要 / 会 / 应该] + Verb + 的,(但是 / 可是 / 不过)…本来是要去,不过后来不太舒服,就没去 (“I was originally going to go, but I wasn't feeling well, so I didn't”). The 是…的 wraps up a past intention that didn't pan out (是 is optional), and there's almost always a “but” clause: 这个计划本来是应该通过,但是预算不够. The feeling is one of contrast or mild regret, “that was the plan, and then…”.

Use 2: emphasis, with 本来就. Here 本来 pairs with to stress that something is inherently or obviously the case, “all along / of course / it goes without saying / supposed to.” The frames are Subject + 本来就 + 很 / 不 + Adjective and Subject + 本来就 + 会 / 要 / 得 / 应该 + Verb: 她本来就很有钱,当然买得起 (“she's rich, of course she can afford it”), 她本来就不喜欢你 (“she never liked you in the first place”), 搬家本来就很麻烦 (“moving is always a pain”). It often sets up an opinion, a piece of advice, or a rhetorical question, close to an exasperated “duh”: 你本来就够瘦了,还要减肥吗? The 就 is what carries this sense, so don't drop it.

So the two uses part ways on the particle: 本来是…的 says it was so but changed; 本来就 says it has been so from the start and still is. Getting this backwards is a real slip: 他本来就有钱 means he's inherently rich (still is), while 他本来是有钱 hints he isn't any more. One last thing to keep straight, laid out in the comparison below: 本来 is not 原来 (yuánlái). They overlap in the “originally” corner, but 原来 also, and mainly, marks a realization, “oh, so it's you / it turns out” (原来是你), which 本来 never does.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 本来是你啊!我没认出来。 běnlái shì nǐ a! wǒ méi rèn chūlái. (for an “oh, it turns out” realization, use 原来, not 本来)
Say this: 原来是你啊!我没认出来。 yuánlái shì nǐ a! wǒ méi rèn chūlái.

Why it happens: A realization, “oh, so it's you / it turns out,” is 原来, not 本来. 原来是你啊 (“oh, it's you!”) reacts to something you've just figured out; 本来 can't do that “aha.” 本来 is for how things WERE at the start (usually before a change), or, with 就, for what's inherently true.

Avoid: 搬家本来很麻烦,你别抱怨了。 bānjiā běnlái hěn máfan, nǐ bié bàoyuàn le. (the emphatic “it’s always been / of course” sense needs 就: 本来就)
Say this: 搬家本来就很麻烦,你别抱怨了。 bānjiā běnlái jiù hěn máfan, nǐ bié bàoyuàn le.

Why it happens: The “of course / it's always been that way” sense needs 就. 搬家本来就很麻烦 (“moving is always a pain”) asserts an inherent truth; drop the 就 and 搬家本来很麻烦 loses that emphatic, self-evident feeling. Pair 本来 with 就 whenever you mean “obviously / all along.”

Avoid: 他本来是有钱的,当然买得起。 tā běnlái shì yǒu qián de, dāngrán mǎi deqǐ. (本来是…的 implies “was, not now”; for “is inherently rich” use 本来就)
Say this: 他本来就有钱,当然买得起。 tā běnlái jiù yǒu qián, dāngrán mǎi deqǐ.

Why it happens: 本来是…的 carries a “was, but not now” meaning, so it clashes with something still true. “He's rich, of course he can afford it” is 他本来就有钱 (inherently rich, still is); 他本来是有钱的 would imply he isn't any more. For a lasting, inherent fact, use 本来就, not 本来是…的.

Compare & contrast

本来 běnlái (originally / all along: a starting state, often changed; or, with 就, inherently so)原来 yuánlái (it turns out / formerly: a realization you've just had)The difference
我本来打算今天去,后来改了wǒ běnlái dǎsuàn jīntiān qù, hòulái gǎi le = “I originally planned to go today, then changed my mind” (本来: a starting plan, then a change)原来你也在这里!yuánlái nǐ yě zài zhèlǐ! = “oh, you’re here too!” (原来: a realization; 本来 can’t carry this “aha”)我本来打算今天去,后来改了 means “I originally planned to go today, then changed my mind,” 本来 setting up a start that changed. 原来你也在这里! means “oh, you're here too!”, 原来 reacting to something just discovered. 本来 looks back at the plan; 原来 marks the “aha.”
这里本来就很安静zhèlǐ běnlái jiù hěn ānjìng = “it’s always been quiet here” (本来就: an inherent, ongoing truth)这里原来是个菜市场zhèlǐ yuánlái shì ge càishìchǎng = “this place used to be a market, it turns out” (原来: formerly, with the discovery colour)这里本来就很安静 means “it's always been quiet here,” 本来就 stating an inherent, ongoing truth. 这里原来是个菜市场 means “this place used to be a market (it turns out),” 原来 giving “formerly” a discovery colour. One asserts what has always been; the other reveals what you didn't know.
Rule of thumbUse 本来 for “originally / at first,” especially when you go on to say things changed (本来…,可是…), and 本来就 for “all along / inherently / obviously” (你本来就很聪明). Use 原来 when you're voicing a realization, “oh, so that's how it is / it turns out” (原来是你), or “formerly” with that discovery colour. Contrasting a start with a change → 本来; reacting to something you just figured out → 原来.

Try it yourself

Say “You've always been excellent.” Use 本来 + 就 + 很 + adjective.
