真 (zhēn): How to Say “Really” / “So…!”
真 (zhēn) means “really” or “so” — an exclamatory intensifier. 真 + adjective in an exclamation (今天真冷!= “it's so cold today!”). It also fronts feeling verbs and 会/能 (你真会说话!).
Why this trips learners up
When you're genuinely struck by something — it's so cold, she's really kind — Chinese reaches for 真 (zhēn), right before the adjective: 今天真冷!(“it's so cold today!”), 你真好!(“you're so nice!”). The exclamation mark is the giveaway: 真 carries real feeling — surprise, admiration, a complaint with heart.
That's exactly why 真 is not the same as 很 (hěn). 很 is the neutral, everyday degree word — half the time it's just grammatical filler (我很好 = “I'm fine”, not “I'm VERY good”). 真 is the emphatic one, and you don't stack them (真好, never 真很好). 真 also jazzes up a few verbs — feeling verbs and 会/能: 我真喜欢!(“I really love it!”), 你真会说话!(“you're so good with words!”), 你真能吃!(“you can really eat!”). One last thing: bare 真 always leads into an adjective or verb — for a standalone “Really?!” you need 真的 (真的吗?).

Common mistakes
Why it happens: 真 stands in for 很 — they don't stack. “You're so nice!” is 你真好!, never 你真很好. Pick the emphatic 真 or the neutral 很, not both.
Why it happens: 真 is for exclamations, not flat statements. As a neutral “I'm fine”, it's 我很好 (with the default 很) — 我真好 exclaims “I'm SO great!”, which isn't what a calm reply means. Strong feeling → 真; plain statement → 很.
Why it happens: Bare 真 has to lead into an adjective or verb (真好, 真会说话). On its own — reacting with “Really?!” — it's 真的 (or 真的吗?), not a lone 真. Keep 真 attached to what it's intensifying.
