还 vs 也 (hái vs yě): Which “Also” to Use

Chinese splits English “also” into two words. 还 (hái) keeps the same subject and piles on a second, different action (“…and also”). 也 (yě) brings a new subject to the same action (“me too”).

Why this trips learners up

English gets by with one word — “also” or “too” — for two quite different jobs, so when Chinese hands you both 还 (hái) and 也 (yě), it's tempting to use them interchangeably. They aren't, and the difference between 还 and 也 is worth settling early. One question sorts almost every case: what is being added?

也 brings a new subject to the same action — it's the “me too” word: 他喜欢咖啡,我也喜欢 (“he likes coffee; I do too”). 还 keeps the same subject and piles on a second, different action — “…and also”: 我要咖啡,还要蛋糕 (“I want a coffee, and a cake too”). Two traps come with 还. It is not 和 (hé): it can't bridge two nouns, so you repeat the verb (要咖啡,还要蛋糕, never 要咖啡还蛋糕). And it sits before the verb of the second clause — never at the end.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 我要咖啡还蛋糕。 wǒ yào kāfēi hái dàngāo.
Say this: 我要咖啡,还要蛋糕。 wǒ yào kāfēi, hái yào dàngāo.

Why it happens: This is the heart of it: 还 is not English “and”, and it's not 和. It can't glue two nouns together — to add a second thing you want, you repeat the verb: 我要咖啡,还要蛋糕 (want coffee, also want cake), never 我要咖啡还蛋糕. Joining two nouns is 和's job, not 还's.

Avoid: 她有一只猫,有一只狗还。 tā yǒu yì zhī māo, yǒu yì zhī gǒu hái.
Say this: 她有一只猫,还有一只狗。 tā yǒu yì zhī māo, hái yǒu yì zhī gǒu.

Why it happens: 还 leads its clause — it comes right before the verb it's adding, and never trails at the end. “She has a cat and also a dog” is 她有一只猫,还有一只狗, not …有一只狗还.

Avoid: 他喜欢咖啡,我还喜欢。 tā xǐhuan kāfēi, wǒ hái xǐhuan.
Say this: 他喜欢咖啡,我也喜欢。 tā xǐhuan kāfēi, wǒ yě xǐhuan.

Why it happens: When a different person does the same thing, that's 也, not 还. “He likes coffee; I do too” is 他喜欢咖啡,我也喜欢 — a new subject (我) joining the same action takes 也. Use 还 here and it sounds like the same person is piling on more.

Compare & contrast

还 — same subject, one more thing也 — another subject, same thingThe difference
我买了菜,还买了水果。wǒ mǎi le cài, hái mǎi le shuǐguǒ.他也买了水果。tā yě mǎi le shuǐguǒ.我买了菜,还买了水果 = one shopper adds a second item (“…and also fruit”). 他也买了水果 = a second shopper, the same item (“he bought fruit too”).
他会打篮球,还会踢足球。tā huì dǎ lánqiú, hái huì tī zúqiú.我也会踢足球。wǒ yě huì tī zúqiú.他会打篮球,还会踢足球 = one player, two sports. 我也会踢足球 = a second player, the same sport.
Rule of thumbAsk what's being added. The same subject piling on a NEW action → 还 (and repeat the verb). A NEW subject joining the SAME action → 也. 还 grows the list; 也 adds a person.
