总是 (zǒngshì): How to Say “Always”

总是 (zǒngshì) means “always” — every time, a habit, a reliable pattern. It's an adverb, so it comes before the verb; before an adjective it needs a degree word (总是很累).

Why this trips learners up

总是 (zǒngshì) is the everyday word for “always” — something that happens every time, again and again: a habit, a routine, a reliable pattern. 他总是迟到 (“he's always late”), 这里总是很冷 (“it's always cold here”). Like other adverbs, it sits after the subject and before the verb.

Two things to watch. First, with an adjective, 总是 needs a degree word in between — 很, 特别, 这么 — never bare: 他总是累, not 他总是累. Second, don't confuse 总是 with 一直 (yīzhí). Both get translated “always,” but 总是 is every time (repeated), while 一直 is the whole time (one unbroken stretch). “It always rains here” is 总是; “it's been raining nonstop today” is 一直.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 我今天总是在家。 wǒ jīntiān zǒngshì zài jiā.
Say this: 我今天一直在家。 wǒ jīntiān yīzhí zài jiā.

Why it happens: 总是 is “every time” (a repeated habit); 一直 is “the whole time” (one unbroken stretch). For something ongoing across a single span, use 一直: “I've been home all day today” is 我今天一直在家 — 今天 is one continuous stretch, not a recurring pattern.

Avoid: 他总是累。 tā zǒngshì lèi.
Say this: 他总是很累。 tā zǒngshì hěn lèi.

Why it happens: Before an adjective, 总是 can't stand alone — it needs a degree word like 很, 特别 or 这么 in between: 他总是很累 (“he's always tired”), never 他总是累. (Before a verb you don't need one: 他总是迟到.)

Avoid: 他迟到总是。 tā chídào zǒngshì.
Say this: 他总是迟到。 tā zǒngshì chídào.

Why it happens: 总是 is an adverb, so it comes after the subject and before the verb — not at the end the way English “always” can float: 他总是迟到, never 他迟到总是.

Compare & contrast

总是 — always (every time)经常 — often (frequently)The difference
他总是迟到。tā zǒngshì chídào.他经常迟到。tā jīngcháng chídào.他总是迟到 = he's late every single time. 他经常迟到 = he's often late — a lot, but not always.
我总是喝咖啡。wǒ zǒngshì hē kāfēi.我经常喝咖啡。wǒ jīngcháng hē kāfēi.总是 leaves no exceptions; 经常 means “frequently,” with room for the times you don't.
Rule of thumb总是 means every time, no exceptions — “always.” 经常 means “often / frequently” — a lot, but not every time. If there's even the occasional exception, reach for 经常, not 总是.
