How to Say “If” in Chinese (如果……的话)

如果…的话 is the everyday “if,” and its trick is a sandwich: the condition sits between 如果 (which opens it) and 的话 (which closes it), then the result follows, usually led by 就 (or the more relaxed 那么 / 那). 如果明天下雨的话,我们就不去了 (“if it rains tomorrow, we won’t go”). Almost every piece is droppable: you can lose 的话, lose 如果, keep just 就, or leave the “if” completely implied. 如果 also swaps for casual 要是 or formal 假如.

Why this trips learners up

Chinese wraps a condition in a sandwich, and that is the key to how to say “if” in Chinese: 如果 + [condition] + 的话,(就) + [result]. 如果 (rúguǒ) opens the “if” clause and 的话 (dehuà) closes it, so the condition is held between them: 如果明天下雨的话,我们不去了 (“if it rains tomorrow, we won’t go”). The result usually takes 就 (“then”), sitting after its subject.

Almost everything here is optional. That’s the second surprise. You can drop 的话 (如果明天下雨,我们就不去), drop 如果 and keep just 的话 (不喜欢的话,就别买了, “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it”), or drop both and let 就 carry the “if” (好吃就多吃点, “if it’s tasty, eat more”). You can even drop everything and let context imply the condition: 有空来我家玩 (“if you’re free, come over”).

The result can also open with 那么 or 那. Instead of (or as well as) 就, you can lead the second half with 那么 (nàme) or its short form 那 (nà), a more relaxed, conversational “then / in that case”: 如果他不愿意,就别勉强了 (“if he’s unwilling, then don’t force it”), 如果你们真的想合作,那么我们应该好好谈谈 (“if you really want to work together, then we should have a proper talk”). 那么 / 那 sits at the front of the result clause, before the subject, where 就 sits later, before the verb, so the two can even appear together (那……就……).

如果 has swap-ins. The same slot takes the colloquial 要是 (yàoshi) and the more formal 假如 (jiǎrú): 要是你来的话… and 假如你来的话… mean the same as 如果你来的话…. Reach for 要是 in speech, 假如 in writing; 如果 is the safe default everywhere.

One trap: 如果 is “if” only in the conditional sense. English “if” also means “whether” (“I don’t know if he’ll come”), but there 如果 is wrong. For that “whether,” Chinese uses an A-not-A question or 是否: 我不知道他会不会来. Save 如果 for a real condition, “if X happens, then Y.”

Common mistakes

Avoid: 的话明天下雨,我们就不去。 dehuà míngtiān xiàyǔ, wǒmen jiù bú qù.
Say this: 如果明天下雨的话,我们就不去。 rúguǒ míngtiān xiàyǔ dehuà, wǒmen jiù bú qù.

Why it happens: 的话 CLOSES the condition (如果 X 的话); it doesn’t open it like English “if.” Put 如果 at the front and 的话 at the end: 如果明天下雨的话…, never 的话明天下雨….

Avoid: 如果你来的话,然后我很高兴。 rúguǒ nǐ lái dehuà, ránhòu wǒ hěn gāoxìng.
Say this: 如果你来的话,我就很高兴。 rúguǒ nǐ lái dehuà, wǒ jiù hěn gāoxìng.

Why it happens: The conditional “then” in the result is 就, not the sequential 然后. It’s 如果你来的话,我就很高兴 (“if you come, I’ll be happy”); 然后 (“and then”) would be telling a sequence, not drawing a consequence.

Avoid: 我不知道如果他会来。 wǒ bù zhīdào rúguǒ tā huì lái.
Say this: 我不知道他会不会来。 wǒ bù zhīdào tā huì bu huì lái.

Why it happens: 如果 is “if” only as a condition. For the “whether” kind of “if” (I don’t know IF he’ll come), use an A-not-A question: 我不知道他会不会来, not 我不知道如果他会来.

Compare & contrast

如果 X 的话 = the full “if” sandwichX 的话 / X 就 … = the stripped-down “if”The difference
如果你想去的话,就早点告诉我。rúguǒ nǐ xiǎng qù dehuà, jiù zǎodiǎn gàosu wǒ.想去就早点告诉我。xiǎng qù jiù zǎodiǎn gàosu wǒ.如果你想去的话,就早点告诉我 spells it out in full (“if you want to go, tell me early”). 想去就早点告诉我 strips it to the bone, same meaning, just 就 doing the work. Both are correct; the fuller one is clearer and a touch more formal.
如果不舒服的话,就去看医生。rúguǒ bù shūfu dehuà, jiù qù kàn yīshēng.不舒服就去看医生。bù shūfu jiù qù kàn yīshēng.如果不舒服的话,就去看医生 is the explicit “if you’re unwell, see a doctor.” 不舒服就去看医生 is the quick spoken version. Keep 如果 and 的话 for clarity; drop them when the “if” is obvious.
Rule of thumb如果 and 的话 are both optional scaffolding around the condition. Full: 如果 X 的话,就 Y. You can drop 的话 (如果 X,就 Y), drop 如果 (X 的话,就 Y), or drop both and lean on 就 or context (X 就 Y, or a bare implied “if”). The more you keep, the clearer and more formal; the less, the more colloquial.

Try it yourself

Say “If I’m free tomorrow, I’ll go.” Use the full sandwich 如果 … 的话,就 …: 如果明天有空的话,我就去。
