How to Say “Only” with 就 (jiù)

Besides “then,” 就 (jiù) often means “only / just,” capping a small quantity. It sits before the subject for “only X” (就他没来, “only he didn’t come”), before the predicate for a small amount (我就去过一次, “I’ve only been once”), and in 就 + Number + Measure + Noun for “only have” (我就一个哥哥, “I only have one brother”).

Why this trips learners up

You probably met 就 as “then / right away” (吃完走). It has another everyday job: “only / just,” marking that there is a small quantity of something. It shows up in three spots.

First, right before the subject, to single one person or thing out: 就 + Subject + Predicate. 大家都很忙,就我来了 (“everyone was busy, only I came”), 灯都关了,就厨房的还亮着 (“the lights are all off, only the kitchen one is still on”). Notice how it often answers a 都 (“all”) in the clause before: everyone did X, 就 only this one didn’t.

Second, right before the predicate, where the small quantity comes after the verb as an amount or object: Subject + 就 + Verb + (number + measure word). 我待了两天 (“I only stayed two days”), 他说了一句话 (“he only said one sentence”), 你买了一张票?(“you only bought one ticket?”).

Third, for “only have”: Subject + 就 + Number + Measure word + Noun. 我就一个哥哥 (“I only have one brother”), 我们公司就三个员工 (“our company has only three employees”). This is close in meaning to 只有, but here you must not add 有: it is 就一个哥哥, never 就一个哥哥.

One last thing to keep straight: this “only” 就 lives right next to the “then” 就. When 就 caps a small number (often with 一个 or 一次, or stands before the lone subject), it is “only.” When it links two events in time (吃完就走, 一…就…), it is “then / as soon as.” What sits around 就, a quantity or a second event, tells you which one you are looking at.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 我就有一个哥哥。 wǒ jiù yǒu yí gè gēge.
Say this: 我就一个哥哥。 wǒ jiù yí gè gēge.

Why it happens: “Only have” is 就 + Number + Measure + Noun, with no 有: 我就一个哥哥 (“I only have one brother”), not 我就有一个哥哥. (只有 is fine, but 就有 is not.)

Avoid: 他就没来。 tā jiù méi lái.
Say this: 就他没来。 jiù tā méi lái.

Why it happens: To mean “only + subject,” 就 goes before the subject: 就他没来 (“only he didn’t come”). 他就没来 means something else, “he just didn’t come.”

Avoid: 我就一哥哥。 wǒ jiù yī gēge.
Say this: 我就一个哥哥。 wǒ jiù yí gè gēge.

Why it happens: Keep the measure word with the number: 我就一个哥哥 (“I only have one brother”), not 我就一哥哥.

Compare & contrast

就 = “only / just” (a small quantity)就 = “then / as soon as” (a sequence)The difference
我就吃了一个wǒ jiù chī le yí gè我吃完就走wǒ chī wán jiù zǒu我就吃了一个 means “I only ate one,” capping the amount. 我吃完就走 means “I’ll leave as soon as I finish,” linking two events in time.
就他没来jiù tā méi lái他一来就走了tā yì lái jiù zǒu le就他没来 means “only he didn’t come,” singling one person out. 他一来就走了 means “he left as soon as he arrived,” a 一…就… sequence.
Rule of thumb就 = “only” caps a small quantity (就他没来, 就吃了一个, usually with 一个/一次 or before the lone subject). 就 = “then / as soon as” links two events in time (吃完就走, 一…就…). A nearby quantity points to “only”; a second event points to “then.”

Try it yourself

Say “My family only has one cat.” Use Subject + 就 + number + measure word + noun.
