How to Say Something “Starts” with 起来 (qǐlái)
Beyond its literal “up” (站起来) and its “seems” use (看起来), 起来 attaches to a verb or adjective to mark that an action or state has just started and is ongoing: Verb/Adjective + 起来 + 了. 哭起来了 (“burst into tears”), 天气热起来了 (“it's turning hot”), 身体好起来了 (“getting better”). It's for spontaneous onsets; for a planned start you use 开始 instead (开始工作, not 工作起来).
Why this trips learners up
You've met 起来 as literal “up” (站起来, “stand up”) and as “seems” (看起来很友好, “looks friendly”). It has a third, very common job: attached to a verb or adjective, it marks that an action or state has just started and is carrying on. The frame is Verb / Adjective + 起来 + 了, a bit like the English “burst into” or “start ___ing.”
With actions, it captures a sudden onset: 宝宝哭起来了 (“the baby burst into tears”), 大家都笑起来了 (“everyone started laughing”), 两个人吵起来了 (“the two of them started arguing”), 小鸟飞起来了 (“the bird took off”). With adjectives, it marks a state coming on: 天气热起来了 (“it's turning hot”), 爷爷的身体慢慢好起来了 (“grandpa's health is slowly improving”), 结婚以后他胖起来了 (“he's put on weight since getting married”).
The key restriction is that this 起来 is for spontaneous onsets, involuntary or sudden actions (哭, 笑, 吵, 飞) and states that come on by themselves (热, 冷, 好, 胖). It does not work for planned or scheduled starts. “What time do you start work?” is 你几点开始工作?, never 你几点工作起来. Likewise a scheduled event uses 开始: 电影开始了 (“the movie's started”), not 电影起来了. So when the start is deliberate or on a timetable, reach for 开始; when it just kicks off, use 起来了.
Two small notes. The inception reading normally needs a 了 to mark the new situation (天气热起来了); the one 了-less case is using it to urge people to start now: 大家唱起来,跳起来! (“everybody, start singing and dancing!”). And 起来 sits after the verb or adjective, 热起来了, never 起来热了. Quick test: if something bursts into action or a state creeps in on its own, it's V/Adj + 起来了; if it's a planned or clock-driven start, it's 开始.

Common mistakes
Why it happens: A planned or scheduled start uses 开始, not 起来. “What time do you start work?” is 你几点开始工作, not 工作起来. 起来 marks a spontaneous onset (哭起来, 热起来); a deliberate, timetabled action begins with 开始.
Why it happens: The inception 起来 normally needs 了 to mark the new situation. “It's getting hot” is 天气热起来了, not 天气热起来. Without the 了, the onset isn't marked as having happened (the only 了-less case is urging someone to start, 唱起来!).
Why it happens: 起来 goes after the verb or adjective, not before it. “It's turning hot” is 天气热起来了, not 天气起来热了. The pattern is [Verb / Adjective] + 起来 + 了, with 起来 clipped onto the end.
