在 (zài): How to Say “Doing” (Present Continuous)
在 (zài) marks an action in progress — Chinese's “-ing”. Subject + 在 + verb (我在吃饭 = “I'm eating”). 正在 (zhèngzài) is the same with a bit more “right now” emphasis.
Why this trips learners up
To say something is happening right now — “I'm eating”, “she's reading” — English adds “-ing”. Chinese puts 在 (zài) in front of the verb: 我在吃饭 (“I'm eating”), 她在看书 (“she's reading”). Want a touch more “right this second”? Use 正在 (zhèngzài) — same meaning, a little more emphatic. 在 is the everyday default.
Two things to keep straight. First, 在 marks aspect, not tense — it works in the past too, as long as something frames the time: 你来的时候我在洗澡 (“I was in the shower when you came”). Second — and this is the big one — 在 has a second life as a verb meaning “to be at” a place: 我在家 (“I'm at home”). So 在 before a verb = an action in progress; 在 before a place = location. What follows tells you which. (The negative splits the same way: “not doing” is 没在, while 不在 means “not here / not at”.)

Common mistakes
Why it happens: To mark an action as in progress, you need 在. The bare verb is a general statement — 我吃饭 is “I eat (meals)”, a habit or a fact. “I'm eating (right now)” is 我在吃饭. Whenever you mean “in the middle of doing”, reach for 在.
Why it happens: 在 (in progress) and 了 (completed) point in opposite directions, so they don't pair up on the same verb: it's 我在吃饭 (“I'm eating”), never 我在吃了饭. If the action is still going, drop the 了.
Why it happens: The negative of the progressive is 没在, not 不在. “I'm not sleeping” is 我没在睡觉. 不在 is the negative of the OTHER 在 — “to be at” — so 我不在 means “I'm not here”, which isn't what you meant.
