之间 vs 中间: “Between,” “Among” and “In the Middle” in Chinese

之间 (zhījiān) and 中间 (zhōngjiān) are both location words for “between” and “in the middle,” and they overlap for a physical space between two points (A 和 B 之间 / 中间). Elsewhere they split. 中间 covers the concrete “in the middle of” a single space or object (桌子中间), “among many” (你们中间), and it can stand alone. 之间 covers a range “from A to B” (八点到十点之间) and abstract relationships (朋友之间), and it always needs framing words.

Why this trips learners up

之间 (zhījiān) and 中间 (zhōngjiān) both land in English as “between,” “among” or “in the middle,” so learners treat them as swappable. They aren't. That's 之间 vs 中间: they overlap in one spot and split everywhere else.

Where they overlap: a physical space between two points. For “A is between B and C” (real, physical space), either works: 上海在江苏和浙江之间 = 上海在江苏和浙江中间. Use the frame A 和 B + 之间 / 中间.

中间 does the concrete “in the middle of” and “among.” Only 中间 can mean the middle of a single space or object (桌子中间, “the middle of the table”; 舞台中间, “centre stage”), or the middle of an event in time (电影中间, “partway through the film”). It also means “among many” (你们中间有人会开车吗？, “can anyone among you drive?”), and it can stand on its own. 之间 needs two separate points, so it can't do any of these.

之间 does ranges and relationships. Only 之间 marks a numeric range “from A to B” (八点到十点之间, “between 8 and 10”; 45到60岁之间), and it names abstract relationships “between” people, groups or countries (夫妻之间, “between husband and wife”; 两国之间). Unlike 中间, 之间 always needs framing words in front of it. So: a concrete middle or “among” is 中间; a range or a relationship is 之间.

Common mistakes

Avoid: 大厅之间有很多人。 dàtīng zhījiān yǒu hěn duō rén.
Say this: 大厅中间有很多人。 dàtīng zhōngjiān yǒu hěn duō rén.

Why it happens: For the middle of a single space (a hall, a table, a screen), use 中间; 之间 needs TWO separate points to sit between. It's 大厅中间有很多人 (“lots of people in the middle of the hall”), not 大厅之间.

Avoid: 价格在一百到两百块中间。 jiàgé zài yìbǎi dào liǎngbǎi kuài zhōngjiān.
Say this: 价格在一百到两百块之间。 jiàgé zài yìbǎi dào liǎngbǎi kuài zhījiān.

Why it happens: A numeric range “between X and Y” (A 到 B) takes 之间, not 中间. It's 价格在一百到两百块之间 (“the price is between 100 and 200”); 中间 doesn't do ranges.

Avoid: 夫妻中间应该多交流。 fūqī zhōngjiān yīnggāi duō jiāoliú.
Say this: 夫妻之间应该多交流。 fūqī zhījiān yīnggāi duō jiāoliú.

Why it happens: An abstract relationship “between” people, spouses or countries takes 之间. It's 夫妻之间应该多交流 (“husband and wife should communicate more”); 中间 is only concrete, so it can't carry the relationship.

The relationship use of 之间. 互相 marks a reciprocal action (互相帮助, “help each other”); 之间 names the abstract space between people where it happens (朋友之间互相信任). 中间 can't carry a relationship.

The “among a group” cousin, not a physical spot. 中间 is the geometric centre or the gap between two distinct things (客厅中间); 当中 means “among a collective” (这些人当中) and never a physical centre. Position between objects → 中间; membership in a group → 当中.

 彼此How to Say “Each Other” with 彼此 (bǐcǐ)

A reciprocal that often sits with 之间. 彼此 is “each other,” and it pairs naturally with 之间 to mean “between the two of them”: 彼此之间要多沟通 (“there should be more communication between you”). This page sorts 之间 out against 中间; 彼此 supplies the “each other” it so often leans on.

 其中How to Say “Among Them” with 其中 (qízhōng)

The partitive 中 word, not a spatial one. 中间 is a physical centre or the gap between two things, 之间 is “between” people or a range; 其中 is neither, it means “among an already-mentioned group” (“of which”). Same 中 character, but 其中 points back into a set rather than marking a position.
